The main purposes of the National & Historical Sanctuaries are the protection of the local habitat the flora and fauna as well as the natural formations that could have some scientific and scenic concern.

Almost ten percent of Peru is incorporated into some form of protected area, including seven national parks, eight national reserves, seven national sanctuaries, three historical sanctuaries, five reserved zones, six buffer forests, two hunting reserves, and an assortment of communal reserves and national forests.
 

The National Sanctuaries & Historical  are: Mejia Lagoons, Ampay, Mangrove Sweeps of Tumbes, Calipuy, Huayllay, Pampa off ayacucho, Machu Picchu

The National Sanctuary of Mejia Lagoons

Intangible area, conservation unit and protection of the fauna and flora, constitutes an important point of rest of numerous species of migratory birds. It is located in the coast area, and it includes the Mejía Lagoons, near the outlet of Tambo River. It is a formation of low flooding lands, separated by a narrow strip of beaches and sandbanks, of the sea.

This is a refuge for migratory birds on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. This area provides food for birds like the playero (Calidris alba) Coming from the North Hemisphere.

It the shores of the lakes we can find frogs (Bufo limensis), lizards (Microlophus tigris) and values (Pseudolapex sechurae) in the hills surrounding the lakes and finally just a few fishes as: the lisa (Mugil Cephalus) and pejerrey (Basilichthys sp.).
 

It is located 150 km (93.2 miles) west of Arequipa and 20 km  (12.4 miles) south of the Mollendo Harbor.

Peru National & Historical Sanctuaries

In this habitat there are carried out investigations and big efforts to preserve and maintain it in their maximum natural state. There are many lagoons with different degrees of salinity, swamps, "totorales", saline and grassy lands that constitute a complex ecosystem. Here you may find 157 species of birds, 72 are residents, 62 regular visitors and 23 species sporadic visitors.

Location: Department of Arequipa, province of Islay.
Area: 690 hectares.
Creation: February 1984.
