| A
fortress city of the ancient Incas, in a high saddle between
two peaks circa 50 miles (80 km) NW of Cuzco, Peru. The extraordinary pre-Columbian
ruin, 5 sq. Miles (18 sq. Km.) of terraced stonework link by
3,000 steps; it was virtually intact when discovered by
Hiram Bingham in 1911. |
The real Inca Trail is a
walking route that leads through the mountains above the
Urubamba river, following (at least partly) the course of an
old Inca roadway leading to the city of Machu Picchu. Many
countries have mountain ranges with beautiful scenery and
Peru itself is richly blessed in this respect with many
other areas for hiking. |

Highlands of Peru |

 |
| Some of the impressive features of Choquequirao, the other
Machu Picchu, are the amazing stone walls protecting it, the
greenness of their fabulous land shelves , and all that
atmosphere charged with energy probably coming from old
ceremonies where they adored the Sun. Spectacular and
distant, lonely and forgotten,Choquequirao |
Imagine hiking through an
amazing Andean landscape of glacial lakes, deep red cliffs,
sparkling glaciers and relaxing hot springs. Most of the
local inhabitants speak the ancient Quechuan language with
little or no Spanish. They dress in beautiful hand woven
ponchos and take care of their herds of llamas and alpacas. |
