The main purposes of the National & Historical Sanctuaries are the protection of the local habitat the flora and fauna as well as the natural formations that could have some scientific and scenic concern.

The National Sanctuaries & Historical  are: Mejia Lagoons, Ampay, Mangrove Sweeps of Tumbes, Calipuy, Huayllay, Pampa off ayacucho, Machu Picchu

The National Sanctuary of the Mangrove Sweeps of Tumbes

There are five types of mangroves sweeps such as: red mangrove sweep (Rhizophora mangle, Rhizophora harrisonii), the salty mangrove sweep (Avicennia germionans), the white mangrove (Laguncu aria racemasa) and the mangle boton (Conocarpus erectus). With regard to the aquatic fauna we con find 33 types of sea shells 34 types of crustaceans and 105 types of fishes.

This area is a refuge for the crocodile of Tumbes (Crocodylus acutus) which is in danger of extinction.

There are different species of birds like: the fragata (Fragata magnificens) among others. With regard to mammals we can see the raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus). The main gual of this sanctuary is to protect the mangroves sweeps wich constitute the only sample of this ecosystem in Peru.

The main objective of Manglares de Tumbes National Sanctuary is to protect and conserve the only mangrove ecosystem in Peru and its great number of flora and migratory and resident fauna. For such a limited distribution, the forest is being lost at a considerable rate. Urgent measures are needed to prevent the complete deterioration of the ecosystem.

The mangrove ecosystem has become one of the most productive extractive areas in the entire Tumbes province. Traditional, non-traditional, rural, urban, transient, and immigrant extractors all utilize the system. Thanks to international support, the protected area has basic infrastructure, a physical presence, delineated boundaries, and a management plan and committee.
